Our Story

Built on buck tracks, not boardrooms

Big Woods Bucks began in Jackman, Maine when Master Guide Hal Blood built a guiding business more than three decades ago, leading hunters after moose, bear, birds, and the whitetails that made the region famous. Alongside legendary Maine guides like Lee “Good Lee” Schanz, Hal saw firsthand what worked and what didn’t in real big woods conditions.

By the mid-2000s, more clients were arriving with expensive synthetic clothing that simply wasn’t suited for the rugged Northeast. The gear was loud in the brush, cold after the hike, and unreliable when wet. That frustration pushed Hal to design his own solution, the first Big Woods Bucks wool jacket and hunting packs, built the way serious deer hunters needed them.

The turning point came in 2009 on a buck track in Ontario when Hal and CEO Chris Dalti made a simple promise while sitting on a log during a break: produce the finest wool hunting gear possible, or produce none at all. That commitment to using only 100% virgin wool and honest, durable designs has guided every product since.

Is wool really quieter than modern synthetic fabrics?

Yes. Wool has a natural dead sound that doesn’t slap or swish when twigs hit it. Nylon and polyester may feel soft in your hands, but in thick brush they’re loud to a deer’s ears. Wool has been the choice for close-range hunting for generations for that exact reason.

What happens if I get soaked in rain or snow?

Wool keeps insulating even when it’s wet. Synthetics and cotton lose warmth the moment they’re soaked, but wool continues to protect you and air dries quickly once the weather breaks. That’s why guides still rely on it in the Northeast.

Does wool really help with human odor?

Wool naturally resists the bacteria that create human scent. It won’t replace playing the wind, but it doesn’t hold stink like polyester. Many hunters wear wool for the entire season without that sour synthetic smell building up.
