Success Stories: A 13 Year Old's Lucky Day

Ryan bags a bruiser at just 13 years old

December 10, 2025 Author : Scott Gaillard

Ryan Belskis (13 yrs old) of Hancock spent a few days learning the ropes of tracking with his dad Darren in the greater Jackman area. With several close encounters with smart bucks, discouragement started to set in. After camp discussions and driving home the importance of "persistence", Ryan set out with his borrowed 7600 .308 and began tracking a fresh buck track with a couple does. With a couple of opportunities when the buck busted out and took off running Ryan was locked on and sneaking through the woods for his opportunity. Suddenly without any sign that another buck was in the area, a buck of a lifetime came walking down a skid trail grunting. When the big buck saw Ryan he locked up and stretched his head straight up while planning his escape. At 25 yards Ryan put a well placed shot on him and dropped his buck of a lifetime. This 8 pointer weighed 180 pounds and Ryan is now hooked on tracking.

Thank you Hal and the Big Woods Bucks Team for sharing your knowledge and motivating the next generation to carry on our heritage and traditions of Big Woods Bucks Tracking.
