Last week, we southern Mainers got 6-10 inches of snow, depending on your zip code. Poor man’s fertilizer, April Fools or winter’s last stand, call it what you will, winter has left the building here in southern Maine!!  With temps banging around 45-65 degrees quite steady now, most turkey hunters have got the fever. I saw more than a handful of guys scouting this weekend and every field has from 1-20 strutters in it. My son and I went crow hunting this morning and had great shooting causing us to empty our shell bag in an hour. This sent us scouting for turkeys earlier than planned. The first field we checked had 15 strutting turkeys. Some were jakes, but some were not, as they tried to corral the dozen hens that fed around them. A mile down the road, five more strutters with six hens only 10 yards off the road. Drove into a farm we hunt, just as nine longbeards chase a bunch of hens off a shit-pile running in front of my truck. Another farm two miles away doesn’t disappoint, as we watch five longbeards and three jakes strutting in the stubble corn. Man, they were everywhere today and the boys are hot, hot. NINETEEN days until the opener!! NINETEEN days until the Big Woods Bucks pro-staff hits the turkey woods with the lucky winners of our youth turkey hunt contest!!
