Well, it looks and feels like summer has settled in on our turkey season. Today, the temps reached the high 80’s and more of the same for the next few days. If you’re a true turkey hunter, don’t let this keep you in bed. The first few hours after sunrise can be productive. The gobblers are putting the final touches on the seasonal dating game. Hens that are receptive are few and far between, sending longbeards on daily missions to find love. Yes, most toms will be roosted with courting hens, but some not. I find it’s best to close the distance between you and a roosted gobbler when hunting late season gobblers. This hunting will and can refine your turkey hunting skills, as hot weather gobblers are finicky rascals and on-guard. Get close and call very little. Get his attention and shut up. I use a decoy, but must admit, it’s risky. When the birds flydown, I’ll call lightly. Soft yelps, purrs and clucks on a slate. Then nothing, letting the decoy and patience be my hope. If the birds don’t cooperate, let them walk off. Make a big circle out around the birds and setup. Wait 35-40 minutes and call again. This method works for me. I believe a hunter must get right into a gobblers comfort zone in the late season.
Tomorrow, I’ll be out to kill an old farm gobbler that my son has been after for a few weeks now. Maybe Dad can find a way to load the old tom in the truck. Yes, it’s hot, but it’s still turkey season. Bring the ThermaCell !!
