Hey folks, as always thanks for stopping by BWB website. Well, the turkey season is in full-tilt-boogie with longbeards falling like bowling pins on a Thursday night. Woodie filled everyone in on the first week and I just wanted to take a minute and report week two is going just fine. Dave Hodson of Indiana and I killed a big 20 lber. on Tuesday @ 0530, as a flock of longbeards followed a couple of hens from the roost to my decoy. Dave had the gobbler at 30 yards for 5 minutes but couldn’t pull the trigger because his “guide” set him up on a bad tree. Well, I tried everything to get that bad boy to raise his head, when finally Dave rocked his noggin’ at 20 paces. A great hunt.
Today was the quietist day from the roost, I’ve heard all season. NO GOBBLING !! NONE….ZERO. Well, we’ve played this game before and I told Dave we were on a mission to check as many fields as possible, until we found a lonely gobbler. Six hours later, we found ourselves in a calling duel with a stubborn old gobbler that gobbled repeatedly, but stayed in the woods. Now, if you remember, one of my tips was to not go walking through fields because gobblers will sit on the edges and watch the field. Well, this old boy was doing just that after he stopped gobbling. Dave and I crept inside the edge of the field towards where we heard him last. It was 11:30 and only 30 minutes to go, when I spotted a longbeard standing 10 feet inside the woods. Dave sent a load of 5 shot, as the big boss tried running off. He made a great shot and I carried the 22 lb. 8 oz. monster to the truck. The biggest lesson here is, NEVER give up. This was the kind of day that would have sent most nimrods to the truck. The birds don’t vanish, they’re still out there. A good turkey hunter will go that extra mile and find a gobbler when the hunting stinks. We did just that and my old legs will feel it in the morning!!
Rob Wing and I will get back to taping near the end of the week, so check back and we’ll show ya some jellyheads!!
