Well it’s down to 3 days until Youth Day here in Maine. The weather has become more seasonable, which means it might rain, snow, be warm or cold, it’s Maine it could do anything. Went out this morning and there was little gobbling off the roost and less when they hit the ground. Saw several gobblers walking about. They didn’t start strutting & gobbling until after 8:00. I came around a corner & saw 5 strutters in full strut in the road. They finally cleared the way after a good show. A few hundred yards up the road & 2 more strutters. Man, one has an extra thick beard hanging at least 11 inches. He’s got a hen and he ain’t leaving her for nothing. Saw several more longbeards before I got home.
The season is fast approaching. Please remember to hunt safe this spring and use your manners out there. If a hunter drives into a spot and there’s a truck already there…….leave. Never walk into another hunters setup. This only ruins his/her hunt and your hunt, too. There are no excuses, just leave.
One last thing from the guys here at BWB, take a kid hunting this spring. Take the time to introduce a kid to turkey hunting and he/she will be hooked for life. My sons were hooked on hunting at an early age and I really believe the lessons they learned out in the wild, helped them in life. There’s no better place to discuss girls, school, sports & life than sitting up against a big oak tree at sunrise waiting for that first gobble. Both my hunting sons have become well-respected young men, students and a record-breaking athlete. Please take a kid hunting !!
BWB tip of the Week: The most important tool to take in the turkey woods is PATIENCE. How many times have you stood up from a setup and seen a gobbler looking eye-to-eye with you ? Be patient, wait that bird out. I have killed more birds after 10:00 than any other time. PATIENCE !!! PATIENCE !!!
