Featured Buck of the Month

Featured buck of the month was created not only to congratulate hunters on their accomplishment but to be able to share experiences they have encountered leading up to their kill. Our belief is that a hunter never stops learning about whitetails and the pursuit of mastering the "art of hunting" is a life long quest. By sharing your experiences, it just might help a fellow hunter get the edge on that square toed buck they are chasing. It might afford them the chance they have been waiting for and beat him on his own turf at his own game. Criteria for selecting the buck of the month is not based solely on the size of the buck but the experiences and lessons the hunter had leading up to their kill.

Richard and Matt Breton

This month's featured buck comes from the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont. A father and son team, Richard and Matt Breton, double teamed this nice 148 lb. 5 pointer on November 17th, 2007. With fresh snow, they took advantage of the fresh track and caught up to the buck in relatively short order. Doubling teaming is an effectively way to track and kill a buck and allows one hunter to watch ahead as the other to watches the track. Based on their story, I think Richard and Matt have the fever for tracking and will hone their skills to consistently kill mature bucks one on one. Once you have the tracking fever and have experienced the satisfaction of killing a buck one on one, you will crave the experience over and over. Additionally, tracking a buck will help you to learn the nooks and crannies of your area, hone your woodmanship skills and learn the habits of what bucks do everyday. This will not only help you kill bucks tracking but it will help you with stand placement and still hunting techniques as well.

Congrats to Richard and Matt on a job well done and good luck this fall.
