Featured Buck of the Month

Featured buck of the month was created not only to congratulate hunters on their accomplishment but to be able to share experiences they have encountered leading up to their kill. Our belief is that a hunter never stops learning about whitetails and the pursuit of mastering the "art of hunting" is a life long quest. By sharing your experiences, it just might help a fellow hunter get the edge on that square toed buck they are chasing. It might afford them the chance they have been waiting for and beat him on his own turf at his own game. Criteria for selecting the buck of the month is not based solely on the size of the buck but the experiences and lessons the hunter had leading up to their kill.

Lloyd Church

This month's featured buck hunter is Lloyd Church aka “Joe Beagle”. He is a “woodchuck” from Cambridge, Vermont. Joe is a Field Representative for The National Muzzle Loading Rifle Association (NMLRA). He shoots competitively at black powder events mostly with flintlocks. Joe is an avid black powder shooter and spends much of his free time on the range. In the winter, he shoots in primitive biathlons (snowshoes and flintlocks). Joe builds most of the flintlocks that he shoots.

Joe has hunted other big game in Maine killing a Black Bear in 2005 with his Flintlock. The big woods buck he took this past hunting season was an eight pointer that weighed 197 lbs. after hanging three days. Joe was using is a Knight “Buckhorn” in .50 cal. He shoots platinum Power Belt 275 gr. bullets with 100 gr. of Pyrodex pellets. Hal and I both have had the pleasure of hunting with Joe during past muzzle loading seasons and have enjoyed chasing the big bucks of the north woods with him. It is nice to see hunters persevere and “close the deal” as Joe puts it achieving goals they have set for many years. Big Woods Bucks was created for that purpose. Our mission statement commits us to help hunters take more deer consistently using tools and techniques we have developed, tested and practice when we hunt. Apparently Joe found the information helpful and put it to good use. Congrats Joe on a beautiful big woods buck and good luck in the future.
